Crucifixion

crucifiction.jpg

This windows portrays the crucifixion of Jesus. The Bible teaches that while still praying in the Garden of Gethsemane his location was betrayed by one of his own disciples, Judas Iscariot. This did not by any means take Jesus by surprise, for Jesus understood the treachery bound up in the heart of Judas long before Judas choose to act upon it. Jesus did not resist the arrest that he knew was going to lead to his death because it was for this reason that Jesus had originally come. Jesus had come to be the perfect and final sacrifice for sin. He had come to bear the wrath of God toward sin, so that all who trusted in His name might escape the judgment of God. The death of Jesus on the cross was a substitutionary way of providing salvation for all who would believe in Him. Jesus died so that all who desire forgiveness for their sins might trust in Him and find eternal life. Until the death of Jesus, sins had only been temporarily covered by imperfect animal sacrifices. But the sacrificial system of the temple became obsolete and unnecessary after the death of Jesus because Jesus, being God’s son, was perfect and without sin. The death of Jesus was a permenantly sufficient sacrifice that never needed repeating since it perfectly covered the sins of all who would believe on His name (Hebrews 7:23-28).

The death of Jesus upon the cross is the central event of the Bible. It is the event to which the entire first half of the Bible builds up, and the event which defines and gives purpose to the later half of the Bible. Without Jesus there would be no savior from sin, and ultimately each person would have to face God directly at the day of judgment—and none would be able to stand. The crucifixion of Jesus is of such tremendous importance for many reasons. A few of the most important are (1) The Bible declares that the penalty of sin is death, and that penalty is now satisfied in Jesus for all who believe in Him. (2) All who believe in Jesus can approach God in prayer directly because they have peace with God through Jesus. (There is no longer a need to approach God through a priest)
