Doctrine
Why does it matter what we believe about God? Why can’t we just each imagine God in the way we think is best, and leave it at that? The most basic reason why every person, or culture, cannot create their own conception of God is that God actually exists. God is not a psychological mechanism that has been created by well-intentioned people to help deal with the difficult or unexplainable aspects of life. The God of the Bible is a living, existing, real being who must be approached on His own terms. God must be worshiped for who He actually is and not for who we would like for Him to be. We must obey the commands He has given, not make up the rules according to how we would like for them to shape up. Over and over again the Bible records how the worship and obedience of people toward God is not tested according to its sincerity, but according to how accurately such actions reflect what God has required of humanity (Exodus 32; Acts 20:27-31). God has progressively revealed Himself in various ways throughout history, and has providentially made sure that a faithful rendering of these accounts was recorded so that later generations might know more of who God is through reading His past works. This record is given to us in the Bible, God’s Word. Though the Bible speaks of many mysterious and divine things, it plainly reveals to us who God is, how he has revealed Himself through His son Jesus, how our sins might be forgiven by faith, and everything else necessary to walk in discipleship to Jesus. Because of this all people are without excuse in their efforts to redefine who God is. The Bible is also clear that all who reject the forgiveness that is only offered through Jesus, and persist in worshipping a god of their own imagination, will be judged by God on the last day and be cast into hell.
It matters what we believe about God. This is why week after week, for over 100 years, generations of men and women at Grace Baptist Church have studied the Bible to understand rightly who God is. We hope you will join us, so that you to might experience the forgiveness, freedom, and joy that only Jesus can give.
